ADA Compliance Explained

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a US law that prohibits discrimination against

individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation,

and all public and private places that are open to the general public. Several manufacturers

will have “ADA Compliant” products, including undercounter refrigeration. The equivalent

legislation in Canada is the Accessible Canada Act (ACA) passed in 2019 with the purpose

of creating a barrier-free Canada by January 1, 2040. However, the ACA applies primarily

to federally regulated entities, therefore when designing a foodservice establishment, it’s

important to review the applicable provincial legislation.

When selecting undercounter refrigeration, it’s crucial to consider the specific needs of your kitchen

layout, any space constraints, and ventilation requirements. The “breathing” of a refrigeration unit

refers to how it expels heat generated by the compressor. This is a critical factor in the unit’s efficiency

and placement options.

Clearances

Require clearance on both sides for proper ventilation

Generally used in freestanding applications

Not suitable for built-in or flush installations

Expel heat from the back of the unit

Require clearance at the rear for proper ventilation

Not suitable for flush installation against a wall

Expel heat through the front of the unit, typically via a

kickplate. Also known as “zero clearance” units.

Can be installated flush with cabinetry or other equipment.
